Generally, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection requires $18,610 as the minimum cost of living to issue a student visa. Your living expenses in Australia will depend highly on which region you plan to live in. For example, more urbanized areas will have higher costs for accommodation. The type of accommodation is also important. Hostels and guesthouses range from $80 to $135 a week, while shared rentals and on-campus accommodation will cost $70 to $250. More expensive options are homestay ($110 to $270 per week) and rental ($100 to $400 per week). Aside from accommodation, your weekly expenses will most likely include groceries or eating out ($80 to $200), gas and electricity ($60 to $100), phone and internet ($20 to $50), public transport ($10 to $50) and entertainment ($50 to $100).

Academic entry requirements Entry into undergraduate courses (for example a bachelor degree) generally requires you to have completed a secondary school qualification equivalent to an Australian Year 12 certificate. Victoria University (VU) operates two facilities to accommodate students of the University and provides a range of information and support services to assist you with every aspect of your accommodation search. Benefits of living near campus The student housing is in convenient and friendly apartment blocks, less than 7km from the heart of Melbourne, close to public transport and Highpoint Shopping Centre. They are also just a short walk to classes at our Footscray Park Campus giving you easy access to on-campus facilities and services including: ? the University library ? bookshop ? cafeterias ? sporting facilities including a gym and indoor swimming pool ? classes ? support services. In addition, student housing is safe and secure, with many fun-packed student residence only events, trips and recreation facilities onsite. Living across the road from Footscray Park Campus gives you the chance to meet people from all around the world and get involved in social and academic activities from a comfortable home base. The student housing is also only a short walk away from the vibrant cafes and markets of Footscray, as well as great public transport access to all VU campuses and the CBD opened in February 2016. This luxury 12-storey student-housing complex offers studio apartments, 2 bedroom and 6 bedroom share apartments to rent. Fully furnished with study rooms, outdoor leisure spaces, on-site cafe and a theatre, UniLodge @ VU offers you a first-class living experience across the road from the Footscray Park Campus. It's just a short walk to Footscray Nicholson Campus and the Footscray Railway station is only two stops to the city and our City Flinders Campus. Living at UniLodge @ VU, you will have the opportunity to mix and meet other VU students and have access to VU's Footscray Park Campus services and facilities. The university accommodation is in convenient and friendly apartments, best suited to single students. When you choose to stay in student housing, you'll have a furnished room, use of facilities, pastoral care and academic support. The apartments at Unilodge@VU offer fully furnished accommodation in single or shared units designed for student living. Just across from Footscray Park Campus, and a 15-minute walk to Footscray Nicholson, the apartments are ideally placed within easy reach of other campuses and the city by buses and trains. Private rental options If you choose not to stay in student accommodation, there several types of housing that you can choose from: ? Share house – for singles and couples. You have a room with use of household facilities in an established household. The room may be furnished or unfurnished and cost of gas, electricity & water may or may not be included in the rent. ? Rooming houses and serviced hostels – for singles or couples. You have your own room and share the house common facilities with four or more other individuals paying separate rent. ? Vacant properties to rent – houses, flats, units, self-contained bungalows and apartments. Most properties to rent are unfurnished. Cost of gas, electricity and water is not included in rent. ? Commercially operated student apartments – furnished apartment or studio apartment, many with common facilities and recreation services. Cost of gas, electricity and water may not be included in the rent. International students looking for private share accommodation or private rental properties are advised to budget and plan to take temporary accommodation on arrival for a minimum of one to two weeks to give you time to inspect the offers you have downloaded from the student housing database or apply for rental properties.
